Autism Action UK (AAUK) have called for an emergency Urgent meeting, with Home secretary Theresa May and David Cameron

Autism Action UK (AAUK) have called for an emergency Urgent meeting, with Home secretary Theresa May and David Cameron,

AAUK Campaigners fear for Gary McKinnon’s mental Health status,

Founder Kevin Healey said, this needs to be halted ASAP, its gone on far too long now, and campaigners want to meet to discuss with the PM and Theresa May that Gary has already been seen and assessed by the top experts in the world of the Autism field,

Earlier today Kevin Healey spoke to Janis Sharp and she said     “This Sunday it will be Autism Sunday, Tomorrow is Gary’s Birthday. Next month it will be nine years since Gary was arrested and ten since his alleged crime. Gary has suffered nine years of torment. He has effectively served a longer sentence than most murderers and rapists. The Government should keep its pre-election promises and refuse to extradite my son Gary McKinnon and end his nine year torture”

Kevin said “Gary has already served his sentence already he is under huge amount of anxiety and the Government don’t really take in to account his Autism the amount of stress he is under is appalling to say the least” a person without Autism (neurotypical) would be stressed and under high levels of anxiety but for someone with Asperger it’s magnified x100 times

Janis Sharp an inspirational Mother Fights on for her son

Janis Sharp

The mother of accused computer hacker Gary McKinnon is to stand against Justice Secretary Jack Straw at the General Election.

Janis Sharp blames Mr Straw, who was Foreign Secretary when Britain’s current extradition treaty was agreed with the United States, for her son’s legal predicament.

Mr McKinnon, 44, from London, is challenging a US bid to extradite him on charges of hacking into highly sensitive military computers.

“(Mr Straw) is personally at least as much to blame for the ongoing legal travesty and betrayal of British sovereignty as any of his Labour Government colleagues,” Ms Sharp said on the Free Gary McKinnon campaign website.

She added: “He was Foreign Secretary at the time of the UK Government’s secret extradition treaty negotiations with the US Government, which resulted in the Extradition Act 2003, which Gary McKinnon and other extradition cases to the USA have fallen foul of.

“The fact that the Gary McKinnon extradition case has exceeded the lifetime of this current Parliament is a scandal which belies any promises of swift or fair justice made by this Labour government.”

Ms Sharp, from Hertfordshire, said she will stand in Mr Straw’s Blackburn constituency as an independent focusing on civil liberties.

Kevin Healey Said-

Gary and his family have gone through enough already this should be halted and stopped, Gary as already served an 8 year sentence of Anxiety, and NO person with Autism should go through this it’s torture, any animal wouldn’t get this sort of treatment the UK Government should be ashamed that they are subjecting this to someone with a Registered disability.

Join the campaign to free Gary Mckinnon and his family from almost a decade of torment

0

A text message will be sent out at 6 pm tonight in the UK and hopefully will go across the pond to America in an attempt to raise awareness over there of the mental anguish this family has been under for so long.
The idea is very simple – send a text to 07591408561 (standard txt rates apply – your number will not be used for any other purpose and I promise that I personally will delete all of them afterwards)
Its free to text this number if you are on O2 in the UK.
At 6 pm (g.m.t.) – you will receive a text back and hopefully you will forward this text to as many people as possible. All o2 phone owners can text their O2 contacts for free – so please put those free texts to a good cause ;)
If you are on a contract phone – simply donate a portion of your ‘free text’ allowance to send the message on – remember – if everyone who receives the text sends it to just 2 or 3 other people – and they send it to two or three others – it will continue to spread and grow exponentially.

Website Dedicated to Gary Mckinnon created by Kevin Healey

http://signup4garymckinnon.yolasite.com/

Here is what you can do:

*Write to your Member of Parliament urging your MP to contact Home Secretary Alan Johnson and asking him to act – he has the power to stop the extradition and even Lord Carlisle has said that Gary could be tried in the UK.

*Contact your local media pledging your support and urging local people to sign our online petition.

*Please encourage your friends and networks to sign our petition.

*Urge local charities, voluntary organisations, community organisations to support our online petition.

It is people power that can change things. Gary McKinnon isn’t a terrorist, he is a man with Asperger’s Syndrome who has admitted that he has done wrong by hacking into US computers – he will not be able to cope with the American penal system. This is why we are apealing for Gary to be tried in the UK.

Please come on board with us, we call upon autism charities and other charities in the United Kingdom to support our campaign and to join our online petition as partners.

THE largest adult autism charity in the UK has appealed directly to the Queen to save hacker Gary McKinnon from extradition.

Campaigner Kevin Healey of Staffordshire Adults Autistic Society (SAAS) has also appealed to Prime Minister Gordon Brown and Home Secretary Alan Johnson to halt the move.

The charity has launched an online petition which has been backed by eight other autism charities.

A total of 464 people have signed it so far.

Palmers Green resident Mr McKinnon has been fighting to be tried in this country after the US Government asked for him to be sent for trial in America.

He hacked into 97 American military computers and the Pentagon and Nasa between 2001 and 2002.

He has always admitted deliberately breaching security but said he was looking for evidence of UFOs and was a not a security threat.

Mr McKinnon suffers from Asperger’s syndrome, a form of autism. People with the condition are often highly intelligent but have difficulty dealing with everyday life and adhering to social norms.

Mr Healey said: “Gary would not be able to cope with been sent to the US, if he his sent his health will seriously deteriorate and he would be at a huge risk from suicide.

“He is no terrorist. He has Asperger’s syndrome. He admits he has done wrong – we maintain that autism is a very complex world and sometimes you have unexplained behaviour.”

Mr McKinnon is also supported by his MP, David Burrowes, former Home Secretary David Blunkett, Mayor of London Boris Johnson and a host of public figures including Sir Bob Geldoff, guitarist Dave Gilmour, Chrissy Hynde, Nick Hornby, Trudie Styler and human rights campaigner Terry Waite.

Appeals have also been sent to US President Barack Obama.

Mr McKinnon’s mother, Janis Sharp has expressed grave concerns about her son’s safety if he were to face life in an American high security jail.

“I fully support Autism SAAS and the petition Kevin Healey has launched to help to keep my son Gary McKinnon in the UK,” she said.

To sign or view the petition visit www.signup4garymckinnon.yolasite.com.

Gary McKinnon – An Election Issue

1

Gary McKinnon and his mother, Janis Sharp

In the run-up to the general election, the government is facing growing demands to halt the extradition of Gary McKinnon to the US, and to repeal the legally-dubious treaty under which his extradition is sought. With almost 3,000 supporters on Twitter, and a Facebook group with hundreds of thousands of members, the public opposition to the extradition of Asperger’s sufferer Gary McKinnon on what have been acknowledged in court to be groundless allegations is something Gordon Brown can no longer ignore.

Gary McKinnon supporters at the Home Office 15th Dec 09

The Home Office has been flooded with letters, phonecalls and emails from voters objecting to this extradition, and MPs around the country have also been pressed by their constituents to protest the extradition.  Strong cross-party support for Mr McKinnon has been demonstrated in Parliament, and at the recent demonstration outside the Home Office, and the government’s own Home Affairs Select Committee have urged the Home Secretary to halt the extradition, yet the government has so far refused to act.

A Judicial Review into the Home Secretary’s decision not to halt the extradition is now set for 25th and 26th May, but Alan Johnson’s potentially unlawful decision not to prevent the extradition, and his attempts to publicly misrepresent the facts of Gary’s case represent a serious stain on the reputation of this Labour government.

You wouldn’t know from listening to Alan Johnson that the only admission by Gary McKinnon, and the only evidence, is for a Summary Offence, disposable by a Caution, and only prosecutable within 6 months of the offence.  It’s been 8 years!  And let’s not forget that Gary was threatened into making admissions, and that no Appropriate Adult was present (without which his admissions don’t count). You wouldn’t know either, if you listen to Alan Johnson, that the allegations of damage caused by Gary McKinnon (without which he is not extraditable) were laughed out of court under Lord Justice Stanley Burnton as ‘hearsay’ and ‘no evidence’.  None of this seems to matter, however; according to the current extradition treaty, unsubstantiated or even, as in Gary’s case, disproved allegations seem to be considered sufficient to warrant extradition, leaving Human Rights legislation as the only means by which a person can fight extradition.

So far, the Home Secretary seems to believe that extraditing someone with Asperger’s from their home country, someone who is now suicidal after the trauma of being threatened with extradition for 8 long years, for crimes that appear on the evidence never to have taken place is not a violation of that person’s human rights.  In modern parlance, I believe the word I’m looking for is “wtf?”

The extradition treaty with the US, which has been denounced by Liberty, by the American Civil Liberties Union, and by the finest legal minds in the country, was signed under Queen’s Prerogative, an archaic manoeuvre which bypasses Parliamentary process.  The text of the treaty was not even seen by Parliament until three months after it had already been signed.  As such, according to a recent ruling at the end of January, extradition under this treaty is illegal, by virtue of the fact that it was not subject to due democratic parliamentary process.

Under the treaty, any British citizen may be extradited to the US without a shred of evidence against them.  Baroness Scotland, who helped to negotiate this traitorous treaty was keen to reassure US senators in documents obtained under the Freedom of Information Act, that IRA terrorists (murderers, let’s not forget) who have found safe harbour in the USA will not be extradited to the UK for their crimes.  She openly admits that this treaty represents a one-sided arrangement in favour of the USA, that when the UK seek extradition, the treaty requires

“a higher threshold than we ask of the United States, and I make no secret of that.”—
[ Official Report, House of Lords, 16 December 2003; Vol. 655, c. 1063.]

Contrast this with Alan Johnson’s oft-repeated claim that there is no effective imbalance in the treaty.

It is not only Gary McKinnon who is being terrorised by this treaty either.  You may have heard recently of the case of retired businessman Ian Norris, who is ill with cancer, and is also being extradited to the USA.  The original allegation against him was not an offence in Britain at the time it is alleged to have taken place, almost 20 years ago, and the House of Lords therefore blocked his extradition, though the Labour government did not, and are now permitting the US to seek his extradition for alleged obstruction of justice instead.

Similarly, Brian Howes and his wife (also seriously ill) are fighting extradition to the US for selling chemicals legal in the UK. They face up to 98 years imprisonment, despite no evidence having been presented against them. They have five children. These are just two cases of many where the USA is seeking the extradition of vulnerable British citizens for non-violent offences occurring in the UK, on unsubstantiated allegations, and or retrospectively for actions which did not constitute a crime at the time, and which took place long before the treaty was even created.

Considering that the US are supposed to be our closest allies, and that the Extradition Act was supposed to be used for terror suspects, it is difficult to understand why the US are persecuting vulnerable British citizens in this way, or why our government is permitting this obvious abuse of process, and the cost to the public purse that this entails.

The government’s failure to step in to protect Gary McKinnon from this blatant injustice may finally be rectified by the courts (whose past record in this matter is pretty shameful, it must be said), but unless the government take action now to stop this and other unjust extraditions, the only conclusion the electorate can draw is that a vote for the Labour Party is a vote for the vicious abuse of the vulnerable to appease a foreign power, a vote against the democratic process, and against the rights of all British people. Who in their right mind is going to vote for that?  Not me.

Hacker should not be extradited to the U.S.

0

HUMAN RIGHTS: Re: Peter Cotton’s letter in The Sentinel, January 13.

I agree with Mr Cotton that Gary McKinnon should not be sent to America. I recently spent a day with his mother Janis Sharp outside the Home Office to protest the extradition of Gary to the U.S.

Gary has Asperger’s Syndrome, a form of Autism, and was only looking for evidence of UFO’s when he hacked into the country’s systems using a blank password search. The U.S. says he caused $500,000 worth of damage, but this has never been proved.

Gary’s solicitor, Karen Todner, has been working hard for him and his family. The good news is they have now won a judicial review and a High Court judge will now rule whether it was wrong to allow extradition.

Gary is in a poor state of mental health because of the seven years of stress. The judicial review will now take place in May and this gives him extra time, and support. However, I would still urge people to text GARY to 65000 – an appeal set up by his mother.

It will now be left to the judge to rule whether Alan Johnson, the Home Secretary was right to decide that sending him to the U.S. for trial would breach his human rights.

Sarah Brown celebrates work of Autism

0

I recently attended the Autism Breakfast reception at Number Garry Mckinnon, the event was put on by Sarah Brown,

I personally think more people should have attended who are on the spectrum, i would like to see charity’s networking but im not sure this would happen, there are three National Charity’s who want to build a ten million pound Autism centre i mentioned this to Sarah, WHY? cant they all network together i guess they all have a different agenda’s , but all want a Autism centre all in the same city, which does not make the slightest sense at all, i think service ussers should be more involved in Autism Charity’s after all they know what is needed and what support they require, i gave Sarah a copy of my book, i did want to talk to Sarah about Gary Mckinnon but there was no time at all as soon as the breakfast reception ended we were spilt into groups, i got up and spoke and addressed all and said how important it was to have a diagnostic service for Adults, and that Adults get IGNORED when it comes to services, also i mentioned the importance of networking with other charity’s, recently i wrote to 40 odd Autism charity’s to ask them to support the Garry Mckinnon campaign only 5 wrote back which i was very disappointed with.

Sarah Brown brought together guests from Autism charities at Downing Street to pool ideas and resources to help their sector.

The Prime Minister’s wife hosted a reception to celebrate the work of the various charities and to look at ways that the sector can work together even more effectively to achieve it’s common aims.

Following the reception, Liz Blackman MP, Chair of the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Autism, led a break-out session at which representatives from different charities discussed specific topics relating to Autism.

Subjects included how to reach out to the broader voluntary sector community and how to work together on core messaging regarding stigma and behaviour surrounding Autism.

Sarah Brown also took part in the group discussions, and was joined by Health Minister Phil Hope and Minister for the Third Sector Angela Smith.

Phil Hope spoke to guests about government strategy on autism and  the role that government can play whilst Angela Smith emphasized how the third sector can be a bigger advocate for social change

Ivan Corea Said

The UK Autism Foundation joined autism charities at Downing Street. The reception and discussion convened by Sarah Brown was to celebrate the work of the charities in the autism sector and discuss ways that the charity sector can work together to achieve a common aim. Sarah Brown focused on her experience of charitable work and the important role that the third sector can play.

Attending the reception were Phil Hope MP, Minister of State for Care Services at the Department of Health and Minister for the Third Sector, Angela Smith MP.

Ivan Corea of the UK Autism Foundation called for new ways of thinking and new ways of working, where autism is concerned. He also raised many issues concerning parents, carers, children and adults with autism and Asperger’s Syndrome including the problems of obtaining blue badges for parents and carers of children and adults with autism and Asperger’s Syndrome.

Among those who attended the function was the autism campaigner Kevin Healey, Chair of the Staffordshire Adults Autistic Society. UKAF has called for a national campaign backed by all the autism charities, to celebrate the success of people with autism and Asperger’s Syndrome and using positive role models such as Kevin Healey, Stephen Wiltshire and others. ‘Children and adults with autism and Asperger’s Syndrome also need role models,’ said Ivan Corea.
